Four car camping hacks for this summer

Hack #1: Know where you're going to camp. You can't just pull off to the side of the road and pitch a tent when car camping. Not only is it unsafe, but it's also likely to get you into trouble. Plan your route and know where campgrounds are along the way. You may have to pay a small fee to camp, but you'll be much safer, camping legally, and have amenities like bathrooms, water, electricity, and more.

Hack #2: Make sure your campsite is well-lit. You don't want to use your headlights and interior lights to light up your campsite when car camping - that's a surefire way to end up with a dead car battery in the morning. Invest in some sort of lighting for both the interior of your car and car tent as well as your site. We highly recommend solar-charged string lights for your campsite and lanterns for the interior of your car.

Hack #3: Stay comfortable and cool no matter the weather. Car camping can be uncomfortable if you don't have what you need to make it work. Our Clermont Toyota dealership recommends car tents - they can be attached to the car itself so you get some of the A/C, lighting, and music at hand. If you're camping in a group, it's a great way to stay connected to everyone you're with while still having enough space to stretch out.

Hack #4: Buy the right gear. Before you hit the road, make sure you have the right gear on hand. Our Clermont Toyota dealership recommends car camping gear like:

  • An air mattress that fits into the back of your car so you can sleep comfortably (and sheets that fit it, as well as pillows and blankets)
  • Window screens so you can roll your car windows down but still keep bugs out
  • A portable solar charger for your devices so you don't drain your car battery or waste gas
  • A small, portable kitchen. This includes a folding table, a camp stove, and a cooler, as well as a collapsible sink and a trash receptacle so you can clean up effortlessly. You don't have to live off of takeout or granola while car camping!
