A Guide to Auto Body Repair: Dents

Make Sure you Have the Right Tools

Before you get ready to repair the dent on your ride, you need to make sure you have the right tools to get the job done and done safely. Here's what you'll need to get started:

  • Protection for your eyes
  • An extension cord
  • Dust mask
  • Protection for your ears
  • A corded drill
  • Angled grinder
  • Sanding block
To get this auto body repair job done correctly, you're also going to need the right materials like: 
  • Wax remover
  • Tack cloth
  • Finishing glaze
  • Body filler
  • 80-, 180-, and 320-grit sandpaper
  • 24-grit sanding wheel
You'll also want to make sure you have touch-up paint for when you need to fill in any scratches as a result of the auto body repair. Preparing the Area

To prep the area for dent repair, you should:
  • Remove the paint inside and around the dented area using the 24-grit sanding wheel. 
  • Switch to 80-grit sandpaper and sand the entire area by hand.
  • Scuff up and feather the paint around the dent. 
  • Clean the area using a wax remover and a clean rag. 
  • Wipe it down with the tack cloth. 
This is where the dent filler comes in. Prepare that by: 
  • Placing filler onto mixing board or cookie sheet. 
  • Apply the hardener
  • Mix the filler and hardener according the labeled directions (avoid making any air bubbles in the mixture). 
Apply the filler by:
  • Evenly spreading it over the dent on your Clermont Toyota vehicle. 
  • Release any and all air bubbles and make sure the bare metal is wet. 
  • Apply a second fill coat.
Contour:
  • Use 80- and 180- grit sandpaper to sand down the filled area to match the contour of the vehicle body. This will how a more seamless auto body repair job. 
Glaze: 
  • Apply the finishing glaze to the entire area
  • Sand the area with the 180-grit sandpaper
  • Then sand the area with the 320-grit sandpaper
Prime and Paint:
  • Spray the primer coat on the sanded patch
  • Paint the area with the touch-up paint and make sure to watch out for drips.
