A Guide to the Basic Parts of the Car Engine

One of the most quintessential components in your ride is the car engine. This collection of parts is responsible for generating power, creating movement, and keeping your vehicle from being a life sized Hot Wheels car. Your engine is responsible for all those things and more and it's no wonder it takes many hours to fully understand its complex inner workings.

At Toyota of Clermont, we're firm believers that a little automotive knowledge can go a long way and can make you a better driver. Today we're going over a few of the basic parts of your car engine. Check them all out here!

Clermont car engine tips

Making the Car Engine Simple

Staring into the Clermont Toyota car engine compartment will likely have your head spinning. While there's a lot to pick through there, we've compiled a few of the most essential parts and what they do for your ride.

Engine Block

Arguably the largest component of the entire engine, the engine block is a large, well, block made of metal. It sits at the center of your engine assembly and houses almost all other engine parts within it. This Clermont car part is also referred to as the cylinder block or just block.

Pistons

Your vehicle's pistons are an absolutely essential component when it comes to normal operation. In internal combustion engines, pistons compress the air/fuel mixture that moves throughout the block. Working with spark plugs, a spark is created that ultimately ignites the fuel mixture and creates power. This power is then translated into rotary motion that's sent to the transmission and then to the tires via the driveshaft. They, in effect, facilitate actual driving.

Cylinder Head

Cylinder heads act as seals for your Clermont car engine compartment. They seal in the gas/fuel mixture which prevents it from escaping and igniting elsewhere in your engine block. This part also houses the spark plugs.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft is used to rotate the cylinders to create reciprocating motion. Cylinders and the crankshaft are joined together by connecting rods.

Camshaft

Camshafts are identified by their round shaft and included "cam" shape. They rotate to further convert motion during combustion. These Clermont Toyota car engine parts also operate the intake and exhaust valves.

Valves

To regulate the flow of air/fuel mixture, your car engine uses valves. Intake valves allow the fuel mixture to enter the chamber for combustion and the exhaust valves allow any runoff substances to exit the chamber.

Oil Pan

Also referred to as a "sump," oil pans perform the simple task of collecting engine oil as it flows through the engine. The sump also collects substances like water and runoff material to keep oil clean as it lubricates parts in your Clermont car engine.
