Car Transmissions Explained

Your vehicle is a complex machine that performs the simple task of moving you. All the ignition, fuel injection, air flow, fluid transportation, and more all work together simultaneously to provide you with motion. While it's not expected of you as a driver to know everything about your ride, having a basic knowledge of car maintenance goes a long way.

At Toyota of Clermont, we're all about automotive education and today we're walking you through the ins and outs of the car transmission. Check it out right here!

Clermont car transmission tips

Car Transmission Basics

Before we dive deeper into the intricacies of the car transmission, let's go over a few of the basics of this Clermont auto part. One of the most important transmission things to remember is that most vehicles come equipped with either an automatic or manual transmission

Manual

This car transmission type is likely the first transmission to ever be used in  a vehicle. Dubbed the original transmission, Clermont manuals require the driver to shift the engine to different gears by using a shifter. This type of transmission is more hands on and requires more input from the driver. While it was once the most common type of car transmission, it's a bit difficult to get your hands on a manual today.

Automatic

Like the name suggests, automatic car transmissions work by shifting for the driver rather than the driver shifting the vehicle by hand. As you drive and your vehicle gains speed and RPMs increase, your vehicle will automatically shift to the corresponding gear without any input from you. These types of Clermont car transmission are convenient in that they allow you to keep a free hand and not have to focus on shifting your vehicle.

Different Types of Automatic Car Transmission

Vehicles are all about choice and your car transmission is no acception. Here are a few of the different Clermont automatic transmissions you might come across:

1) Conventional Automatic

One of the most common automatic transmission out there, conventional automatics work by using a torque converter and electronically-controlled clutch pack for shifting. All you have to do is press the gas and brake pedals and you're good to go.

2) Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

CVTs are fairly common in Clermont Toyota cars because of their great fuel efficiency. These car transmissions don't "shift" like normal transmissions. Instead, they use a system of pulleys to transition to "gears" between RPMs and speeds. This removes the shifting feel you experience in other vehicles. However, while smoother, this transmission can cause excessive noise and a reduction in power.

3) Automated Manual

If you cross a manual with an automatic, you get an automated manual. This unique car transmission doesn't use a physical clutch but instead opts for a computer automated one. You can recognize Clermont Toyota cars with automated manual transmissions by their paddle or expanded shifters.

4) Dual-Clutch Automated Manual

Probably the most uncommon of the bunch, dual clutch automated uses two different gear shafts, one for even gears and one for odd, to shift. This system's computer pre-selects the next gear and automatically shifts to it while disengaging with the previous gear.
