Prep your car for driving in the snow

Do you see yourself getting out of town this holiday season? If you're heading north to see family and friends, you may find yourself driving in the snow. We've got tips on how to handle driving in the snow, but making sure your car is also ready is another big part of the equation. Before you head north, bring your car to Toyota of Orlando and let us prep it for the cold weather. Here are some of the services we recommend.

5 auto service appointments you should make before driving in the snow

1. Tire inspection: You should always inspect your tires before driving in the snow. You'll want to ensure they're filled to the proper PSI and also have enough traction to handle slick surfaces (like snow and ice) before you leave. Additionally, if you're going to be driving in heavy snow, you may want to consider winter tires or tire traction devices. Our Orlando auto service techs can advise you on what's best for your situation.

2. Oil and antifreeze swap: The fluids that you normally use here in Central Florida - namely oil and antifreeze - may not cut it when you head north into winter weather. Ask our techs about special oils and coolants that you may need when driving in the snow to protect your car and provide the best performance.

3. Battery check: Winter weather can be hard on your car's battery so ensure it's in the best shape possible before you hit the road. Have our Orlando auto service techs check not only the voltage but also the general condition, looking for signs of leaks, swelling, or rust. Replace your battery before driving in the snow if it's not in good shape.

4. Heater and defroster service: You want to ensure your heater AND defroster both work well before driving in the snow - the heater will keep you warm while the defroster will ensure you have visibility of of both the front and back of your car.

5. Windshield wipers replacement: Your wipers will be no match for the snow if they're not in good condition. Consider replacing them before you hit the highway so you can have good visibility even if it's coming down outside. And a word to the wise - don't attempt to use your wipers to clear ice off of your windshield. It'll just damage your wiper blades and render them ineffective next time you need to use them.

Our Orlando auto service experts also recommend applying a good coat of wax to your car to protect it from moisture and packing an emergency winter car kit. It should include things like a shovel and kitty litter in case you get stuck in the snow, blankets, snacks and water, and jumper cables (at the very least).
