Toyota of Clermont explains what to do after a car accident
Getting into a car accident is probably one of the scariest and most stressful situations you’ll encounter when you’re behind the wheel. However, if you know what steps to take after a car accident before you actually get in one, you’ll be able to handle it with as little stress as possible. Toyota of Clermont’s body shop is here with simple tips on what to do after a car accident straight from our auto body experts.
The 7 steps to take after a car accident
- First, assess everyone in your vehicle immediately after a car accident. Is anyone injured? If so, call for emergency assistance.
- Next, pull your car OFF the road (if you can). This will get you out of the way of other vehicles and reduce your chances of getting into a second accident. If you can’t move your vehicle, turn your hazard lights on to try and make your Clermont Toyota more visible and then you and all of your passengers should exit the vehicle.
- Call the police. You’ll want to file a police report for your insurance company so alert the authorities as soon as you can.
- Exchange information with the other driver. This is critical for filing your car insurance claim. You’ll want to get their name and phone number, as well as their insurance information. It’s also a smart idea to get the make, model, and year of their vehicle.
- Document the details. How did the accident happen? Where and what time did it happen? Write everything that you can down so you can relate the details to the police and your insurance company. You should also take photos of the accident damage on both cars for documentation.
- If there are witnesses, get their contact information in case you need them to corroborate your story.
- Once you’ve recorded everything and filed your accident report with local police, contact your insurance company to get a claim started. The sooner, the better.
