Winter is coming. Well it's actually already here and you might have noticed that it's much colder outside. Here in Clermont, Florida we don't often have to worry about frigid cold conditions like snow, hail, and ice forming on the roads. But, this winter is much colder than normal for this time of the year and there's a good chance that things could frost overnight and we're not just talking about your potted plants (definitely bring them inside or put sheets on top of them to keep them alive). No, we're talking about your windshield.
If you're like most Floridians, you probably don't keep an ice scraper at the ready because, why would you need to? But, you can never be too careful and you should always be ready for the unexpected. That's why Toyota of Clermont is here with some helpful tips for de-icing your auto glass in case things get a little frosty!
Get Rid of That Pesky Ice
Ice on your auto glass presents a unique problem that many of us Clermont residents have rarely encountered (or it brings back painful memories from when we lived somewhere a little farther north). Either way, ice on your windshield is painfully obstructive and you shouldn't drive anywhere until it's gone. To help you remove it, here are a few methods:
Start with your Parking
The best form of removal is prevention and the easiest way to do this is by parking in a location that won't get icy overnight. Leave your Clermont Toyota car parked in a covered spot like a garage or under a carport. If you can't find a spot like this, you can always put a sheet or cover over your auto glass to prevent ice from forming.
Use a Frost Shield
While it probably won't be necessary for living in Clermont, you should probably do this if traveling by car to somewhere cold. There are many pre-ice treatments available via an auto parts store that are specifically for preventing ice from forming on your auto glass. But, be warned. These products are harmful in the event of excessive exposure and are especially harmful to your pets if ingested. You can always make your own solution out of white vinegar and water to save money and use a more natural substance.
Use Your Defroster
Every Clermont Toyota car comes equipped with a defroster setting so use it! This is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get the job done. Start your engine, turn on the heater and defrost settings, turn on the recirculation setting, and keep it on full heat. After a few minutes you should see the ice begin to thaw.
Use a Scraper
A classic and bold method. Ice scrapers are handy and are likely the quickest method of removal (besides prevention). But, before you start scraping away, keep these things in mind. A paint scraper can easily double as an ice scraper and they're much cheaper and readily available in Clermont. Also, remember to use something made of PLASTIC and not metal.
Your visibility out of your auto glass is important and without you can't hope to commute safely to your destination. If you find your view a little icy try these tips and get yourself seeing clearly in no time.
