Additional tips for driving at night

Do you often find yourself behind the wheel after the sun has gone down? Everyone who drives at night knows that driving in the dark is very different from driving during the day. It requires a different type of focus and a pretty substantial adjustment to your driving habits. Toyota of Clermont has offered tips in the past but good news - we've got a few more to share with you to ensure that your experience driving at night is as safe as possible.

How to adjust your habits for driving at night

Tip #1: Clean your windshield and mirrors. Before you decide on driving at night, you should clean your windshield and side mirrors with a piece of newspaper or a microfiber cloth. This will ensure you don't have any streaks, smears, or fingerprints on the glass. These smears may not make a difference during the day, but at night they can reflect light and skew your vision, leaving you in an unsafe situation.

Tip #2: Dim the lights in your instrument panel and controls. You should also dim the interior lights of your Clermont Toyota before driving at night. This means your instrument panel, too. Bright lights on the interior of your car can distract you from the road and put both you and your passengers in danger. This goes for your actual interior lighting, too - while it's not illegal to drive with interior car lights on, it's not a good idea because it interferes with your ability to clearly see the road.

Tip #3: Wear the right type of eyeglasses. Are you wearing the right eyeglasses for driving at night? If your glasses don't have an anti-reflective coating on them, they can actually reflect light from your surroundings and other vehicles and make it difficult to clearly see where you're going. We recommend getting a pair with this special coating or investing in a pair of lenses that clip over your glasses for nighttime driving.

Tip #4: Ensure that your headlights are aimed evenly. Are your car headlights aimed evenly? Believe it or not, they may be uneven and this can affect your visibility pretty drastically when you're driving at night. The best way to check is to pull up to a wall with your headlights aimed at it; examine the beams on the wall to make sure they're the same height. If they're not, adjust the bulbs accordingly.

Tip #5: Be on the lookout for small green lights. It sounds weird, we know, but you should look for small green lights in the road when you're driving. These little green orbs are actually the eyes of animals - their retinas reflect light from headlights and cast a greenish glow. If you see these orbs,  you know an animal is on the road ahead and you should adjust your driving accordingly.
