What makes hybrid car batteries different?

First things first: Hybrid car batteries are a bit different than your typical car battery. They need to hold lots of charge and hold it for a long time because they're responsible for powering your car when the internal combustion engine isn't. That's how Clermont Toyota hybrids work - the battery and the engine switch off powering the vehicle to save fuel and cut down on emissions.

There are three types of hybrid car batteries - here's the breakdown.

  • Lithium ion batteries are pretty common - you'll actually find them in more than just cars. Since they can hold a large amount of charge over a long period of time, they're popular options for devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets. However, as time goes on and they age they start to lose their retention power (and lose charge faster) and they can be pricey.
  • Nickel metal hydride batteries are also common - in fact, it's what you'd find under the hood of a Clermont Toyota Prius. These car batteries are reliable, hold charge well, and are less expensive than lithium ion batteries.
  • Lead acid batteries are the least common and aren't the best for cars. While they are super reliable and not likely to give out anytime soon, they can't hold charge for long. If you were to put one of them in your Clermont Toyota, it could only travel about 10 miles before the battery needed to be charged again.

The big question we typically get from Clermont Toyota hybrid shoppers is how long the car battery will last. It's a fair question; with such an important part, you'll want to know how often you'll need to shell out for a new one. Here's the good news - while hybrid car batteries used to typically konk out at around 100,000 miles, they now can go upwards of 200,000 miles without batting an eye.

And the next inevitable question - how much will it cost to replace this type of car battery? As noted, it's not like a typical battery; it plays an important role in powering your car in place of the internal combustion engine. It used to cost around $10,000 to replace them, but - catch your breath - the cost now ranges from $1,000 - $5,000  depending on your make and model.
