Tips for driving in high winds

Hurricane season is in full swing here at Toyota of Clermont. With hurricane season follows heavy rain and super high winds that can damage your car or cause items to come flying off of your car if you’re unprepared. High winds can also affect your commute to work, running errands, and dropping off your children at daycare for even the most experienced drivers. Luckily, there are some Clermont Toyota tips to keep your car and you safe this summer in the high winds.

Tip #1 Watch the weather.

It’s best practice to double-check what the weather will be for that day before heading out for your commute to work. If you see a giant path of green, yellow, and red on the weather, then I would rethink what time you’ll leave. You can plan to leave a little earlier or later to avoid potential road hazards as well.

Driving in high winds is not a time to speed.

Tip #2 Go the speed limit.

Speed limits are there for a reason, and it’s to keep you safe while cruising in your whip. However, at Toyota of Clermont, we know how hazardous high winds can be. We suggest going a little bit slower than the posted speed limit so you don’t hydroplane or get into a car accident. However, if the latter happens, you can bring your car to our Clermont Toyota auto service technicians to fix your car!

Tip #3 Keep your distance.

Another great Clermont Toyota tip is to keep your distance between you and the car in front of you. You’ll want to put more space in front of you than normal because you might have to brake suddenly if there is any flying debris or if something falls off from the car in front of you. This will help prevent a Clermont Toyota auto repair and save you some money at the same time!

Tip #4 Keep both hands on the wheel.

When those high winds are whistling away, it’s good to keep both of your hands on the wheel and not get distracted with any texts. This can prevent a car accident by staying vigilant.

Tip #5 Remove any exterior items on your Toyota car.

If you must go out during high winds, then you should at least remove any loose items from your car. Go ahead and remove any bike racks, kayaks, and luggage so that it doesn’t come flying off of your car and cause a road hazard or car accident.
