Mice in your car: What should you do?

If you see mice - or even one mouse - in your car, its time to take immediate action. Mice are pests, sure, and you don't want them running around your vehicle, but what most people don't realize is the extent of damage that mice can do while they're living in your ride. Toyota of Clermont is here with tips on how to get mice out of a car!

How to get mice out of your car

You need to know how to spot that mice are living in your car (besides the obvious sign of seeing a mouse). Here are some signs you have an infestation of this furry pest:

  • You can't get your car to start (this indicates wiring damage)
  • You see holes in your car seats or in the foam in the seats
  • You find mice droppings
  • You smell something bad - this can be from a dead mouse, or mouse urine/droppings
  • You find a mouse nest in your car or under the hood of your vehicle

Your Clermont Toyota is the perfect place for a mouse to hide. It's warm, dry, and a place to hide from predators and build a nest for babies, especially if you're not cleaning your car regularly and there are crumbs and trash for them to check out. Plus, a lot of the wiring system in your car is made with soy-based wiring insulation that tastes great to mice and other rodents.

Now that you know how to spot mice in your vehicle, it's time to learn how to get mice out of your car. Here are the steps to take:

  • Park your car in direct sunlight and turn on the heat. Just like us, extreme temps make mice unhappy - this may force them to evacuate.
  • Honk your horn several times (sorry, neighbors). This may startle them enough to make them leave.
  • Try mice repellant. You can find it at home improvement stores. You can also try peppermint oil - some drivers swear that mice don't like it. Soak some cotton balls in it and start leaving them around your vehicle (plus, your car will smell like Christmas).
  • Set mousetraps. This is the last resort, we get it, but it's an effective and efficient way to get mice out of your car.

And once you've gotten the mice to vacate your vehicle, you need to keep them out. Here are some tips to keep mice away from your Clermont Toyota:

  • Keep your car clean at all times. Leaving trash and crumbs inside your car will only attract mice to make a home there (free buffet). You should also clean up spills ASAP.
  • Close your doors, windows, trunk, and sunroof when you're not in the vehicle.
  • Park inside of a garage if you can; if not, try not to park next to dumpsters, bird feeders, and trash cans.
  • Use your car regularly. The longer it sits unused, the higher chance you have of a mouse infestation.
