Toyota of Clermont explains why love bugs damage your ride

But before we start, let’s talk a bit more about the culprit. Lovebugs originate from South and Central America, despite the rumor that University of Florida created and then accidentally released them. They may be annoying, but they’re not harmful to people - they don’t sting, bite, or do any damage to plants or crops. In fact, their larvae feed on decomposing plant and animal matter so they actually help matters when it comes to natural recycling.

What they do to your car, however, is another story. Lovebugs are extremely acidic, so when they splatter on your car they can actually eat through the paint and leave very noticeable damage. You need to protect your ride in the few months that these pests swarm the Southeast, and we’ve got Clermont Toyota tips to help you do it.

1. Invest in a good wax.
Find a high-quality wax for your car and apply TWO coats after you wash your car. Why? This will create a thicker barrier between the bugs and your car’s paint, meaning there’s less of a chance that the paint will be damaged when you hit the road.

2. Wash your car as often as you can.
It’s annoying to have to wash your car often, we know. But the longer you leave dead bugs on it, the harder they are to wash off and the higher the chance that you’re going to have irreparable paint damage. Wash your car as soon as you get home if there are any bugs stuck to it.

3. Buy some dryer sheets.
Not a fan of washing your car? You’re not alone - and if you buy a box of dryer sheets, you may not have to. Sometimes rinsing your vehicle and using a dryer sheet to gently scrub the dead love bugs off will do the trick. Just be sure to not scrub too hard - you don’t want to scuff the paint.

4. Try to drive long distances after sundown.
Lovebugs tend to swarm during the day. If you’re hitting the road and covering long distances, you might want to save your journey until after sunset so you’re less likely to hit big clouds of them.
